Baroque Dub Mixtape Fourty [bdmx0040] Massive!

We kick things off with a suitably chilled out track from Polish tech-dub netlabel Qunabu. It's been a while since I've included this kind of electronic dub on one of the mixtapes. Then Army Of One pick up the pace with a wonderful reworking of Horace Andy's Every Tongue Shall Tell.

Next up is the first of many selections from the Africa Beat label - I'm just loving the bouncy good vibes of their dancehall releases! The screw dem riddim here appears as an instrumental by Dreadsquad followed up by Perfect's take.

Then we're back to more traditional baroquedub vibes with Nick Holder's upfront UK steppers anthem followed neatly by a dubstep-ish offering from Bdum Bdum Sound. Regular listeners will be well aware of my slight loss of faith in the dubstep scene, but this track's got all the bassbin defying, floor shaking, head nodding fun I used to like in the genre. Top work!

Legends of the sound system, Iration Steppas represent with a classic conscious lyrical outing. At a time when many are thinking about their New Year's resolutions, it's a timely reminder that dreads is an attitude not a fashion. Be it, live it - it ain't about what you look like but about who you are.

Perfect is up again with another riddim from Africa Beat, this one entitled Bad Boys 2009. I so wish I'd found this track a few months ago before my set at Shambala's Roots Yard - this one's made for blasting across fields of tents at a festival! :) Burro Banton jumps on the riddim without dropping a beat before switching to the Cherry Pie riddim with No problem. This is dancehall as party music rather than gangster slackness. As it should be!

Junior Cony was a relatively recent discovery for me. I can't recommend his blend of upfront dance dynamics and big dubs enough! This one grooves and powers along before propelling us into Little John's floor pleaser. After what some purists might find a little too mainstream it's time to get back to some classic roots with Freddie McKay's timeless sermon and a perfect Johnny Osbourne double. You might say that they don't make 'em like that any more but the Mad Professor's mix of assorted Negus Roots backing tracks is a great example of the next generation taking on the reggae mantle and reinventing it in exemplary style.

I couldn't end this 40th anniversary selection without a nod back to the global perspective and world beats and breaks that have peppered previous compilations. What better example than Caliajah hip-hop/reggae crossover, or Djosos Krost's wonderfully funky MPC workout, followed by some chilled beats from Yonderboi?

We finish off with the ever prolific M. Ward whose She & Him duets with actress Zooey Deschanel, I'd particularly recommend to fans of 50s nostalgia. Here he wraps things up neatly with a nearly seasonal ditty. Here's to the next One Hundred Million Years...

Baroque Dub Mixtape Thirty Nine [bdmx0039] Heavy, Heavy Culture

We kick things off with a heavy, heavy dub from an experimental Welsh band who are equally versatile in rap, reggae, hip hop, and punk before getting back to more familiar baroquedub territory thanks to Linval Thompson's roots classic followed by DEB Music Players, produced by the legendary Dennis Brown, laying down the perfect groove.

From Jamaica we take a trip to the Hawaiian island of Kahalu'u with reggae band Natural Vibrations, before heading off to the land of the long white cloud and two choice remixes of the already wonderful Cay's Crays. We're now truly in digi-dub territory with Radical Guru's steppers anthem leading the way for Israeli DJ Kukan Dub Lagan here sampling what sounds to me like an uncredited Ari Up, being as upfront and raw as only she can be. Regular favourites Radikal Dub Kolektiv pull off a neat 'half time da riddim' trick on the classic steppers beat, which brings us neatly back to some conscious one drop lyrics from Ras Michael, followed by more wise words courtesy of Rod Taylor.

Sly & Robbie Meet The Mad Professor with a psychedelic mix perfect as an introduction to Heavyweight Dub Champion and Brooklyn-based Dr Isreal. The ever prolific Dubmatix lightens the mood (check out the new album and his contribution on the forthcoming on Dub Side of The Moon remix album) then things start to wind down with Beres Hammond's Last War. From one great singer to another and a little bit more with a Michael Rose dancehall killa. Time to call it a day with Max Romeo's crowd pleaser.

Baroque Dub Mixtape Thirty Six [bdmx0036] Righteous & Upfront Dub

People get ready for some upfront and righteous dub - the Upright Sound System gets the party started before Tone396 (the first of two contributions from the legendary Version Big-Fi producer) takes the reins and propels the mix into proper dance territory.

We take a slight breather with Prince Jammy before Dan-I and King Kietu get us back to more sound system goodness. Slimmah Sound's deep, soulful anthem is a beauty to behold and flows into yet more conscious sounds from Ijahman - a cut from the fascinating Time Warp Dub Clash (Old School vs. New School) compilation LP. At which point it seems a good time pay our respects to the originators with The Revolutionaries' Outlaw Dub before morphing back to the new school with a Manasseh mash-up.

Israel Vibration's sweet, sweet harmonies lead on to more pure roots majesty from Peter Broggs & Jah Warrior. Then Brother Culture's digital dancehall sound reminds us of how far we've come from Don Carlos and the Roots of Dancehall. Time to ease into Dub Scientist's wonderfully melodic Creation, before Barry Brown heats things up again with Fire, Fire and Lone Ranger rattles off his extraterrestrial shaggy dog story. More vocal bliss courtesy of Prince Alla with a track that's simply awesome in the depth of both its production and its message, followed by further conscious lyrics from AMP Outernational featuring Echo Ranks on vocal duties.

Version Big-Fi represent again with their up-for-it take on The Bug's Skeng, leading us neatly into a sprinkling of dubstep and the Phokus remix of Jazzsteppa's Five. Dubsteppers are still peddling their wobble bass but this one's got more than enough charm in its use of rootsy horns to let the track rise above some of the unoriginality of the genre. Someone who certainly couldn't be accused of doing things by numbers, trailblazer Disrupt makes yet another appearance on a baroquedub mixtape with a suitably over-cooked yet sizzling production.

We're nearly home. It could have all ended with Linval Thompson's A Wicked Dub but Espers provide just one more track to cleanse your pallet and let you drift off to where ever you're heading. Until next time...

Baroque Dub Mixtape Thirty Five [bdmx0035] Soundsystem Goodness

Singer Blue & The Dubateers kick off an hour long mix full of soundsystem goodness, with the Atiko Minus Project from Greece and Energy Crew, from France, both doing a great impersonation of the UK Dub sound. On to more of a Jamaican dancehall vibe with Papa San, Super Cat and Eek-A-Mouse representing - but not forgetting a slight detour to Trinidad (via Toronto) courtesy of Kobo Town's exquisite take on traditional calypso rhythms.

A personal favourite, Disrupt's 8bit reggae brings the proceedings back up to date before we launch into Gü-Mix's jump-up, club-friendly sound (more of which later...) Dubmatix take things straight back to the roots with reggae veteran Alton Ellis guesting on vocals then Waldeck gets us back to the dancefloor with a wonderfully wonky conscious techno stomper that would make Rhythm & Sound proud. Next up is the highly recommended glitch-hop dub of Automaton followed by Dub Li Cut's sub-heavy junglist/breaks mash-up.

Rodney Hunter is the third Viennese-school producer on this mix (Gü-Mix and Waldeck also both come from the city that gave us Kruder & Dorfmeister) Featuring stalwart Paul St. Hilaire, this Dub Club classic is an anthem worthy of this hallowed club (started by none other than Gü-Mix way back in 1995).

Having travelled from underground soundsystem to the mainstream of club culture, it's time to wind up the proceedings with the Clancy Eccles All Stars literally taking us back to the root of it all; Kingston Town.

And just when you thought xmas had come early and you'd already had all your presents, it gives me very great pleasure to offer you something a little bit extra for your stockings....

Daquta (aka DJ Samu44) got in touch recently asking if I'd mind if he made a best-of mix of his own, using selections from the various tracks that have appeared on the baroquedub mixtapes. Got to say I was honoured that someone cared enough to be that much of a fan! It's something I'd thought about doing many times, but never actually got round to doing...

The result is a truly inspired journey of epic dub proportions. Some of the tracks you'll have heard here before, others are new to me (exactly what the best mixtapes are all about!) and all are pure quality.

On its own merits this selection comes highly recommended to all baroquedub listeners but it's even more amazing when you find out that Daquta is none other than an 11 year old DJ from Norway. Nuff respect!

Get ready, get set for another bumper pack selection of the usual baroquedub eclecticism.

We start off with a pair of uptempo Benny Page mixes designed to get you in the mood before halving the tempo into Oluge's Istanbul Yard. Chilled after the initial beats frenzy, but this mix isn't one for lying down and taking it easy - Roots Manuva Scruff's it up with a touch of electro ragga and the hip-hop pedigree continues with a Rae & Christian excursion into Faze Action reggae vibes. Little Jay and Rob the Viking step up with more down-the-line phat beats before Soha broadens our horizons with a heady mix of classic jazz vocals, Cap Verde reggae and Cuban rhumba.

Old punks will delight in Ari Up's recent return with a new album. Here The Slits' vocalist comes head-to-head with X.A. Cute in dark and dangerous mix with an unsurprisingly uncompromising lyrical turn. Scientist provides some much needed respite with a typically genius dub before Loopa Scava goes off to meet Cayetano, dancing to an intricate tango as the rains come, again. Now we're off on a whirlwind world adventure with Kokolo's Congo Bongo latino/afro-beat before heading back to more familiar Jamaican territory with Lightning Head (aka Bigga Bush From Rockers Hi-fi) featuring the vocal talents of Singing Bird. Then it's pure tribal dub of the highest calibre from Terrestre before Wareika Hill Sounds' reworking of Tony Allen takes things into truly psychedelic space. Irie!

Funkstörung (r.i.p!) on a surprise pop tip segues nicely into an inspired cut-up of the classic easy-listening gem 'Sway' - an effortless balance of the mainstream and experimental that Basemann Jaxx have been pulling off to great success for most of their career.

Shout out to the ever prolific Version Big-Fi whose releases are never short of pure quality. Here they represent courtesy of Papa Grey's perfect and timeless upfront dub. We're nearly home and dry; Uptown Selector's taking the sidewalk to more exotic places via Bajofondo's nuevo-Argentina and finally, take a flight of fancy with the cross-cultural glory of Don Cherry and Latif Khan's Air Mail (thanks to the b-side of Chin Chin's recent reworking).

The Road Less Travelled

Back with a hatful of tricks after a long summer sabbatical. Inspired by festivals in Cuba and the UK, and following a request from Nuno Madaleno for a return to the global journey that was Mixtape 13, you'll find this latest installment to be quite a ride!

After the usual slow burning start, we turn up the heat with Brent Lewis' unique world beat before Peverist takes on the polyrhythmic challenge with a track that builds from IDM electronica to techdub anthem. By the time Sebbo's Watamu Beach kick in, the party's in full swing. We travel effortlessly from its tribal 4-to-the-floor to a glorious steppers rhythm from Polish (?) artist Kaunas and then take time to draw a breath for a choice dub of Burning Spear's Fittest of the Fittest.

Next up's a Russian fusion of reggae and rhumba (don't get fooled by the French and Portuguese vocals!) with the Green Point Orchestra's lament to a lost love that explores the meaning of the untranslatable Brazilian word 'soldade'. Time for some guidance to the promised land from the classic roots of The African Brothers with Sugar Minott on vocals and a fat dub courtesy of who else but King Tubby.

Rainbow Arabia, despite the name and the lyrics of this song represent from Echo Park, California. They're a great example of the kind of musical melting pot currently being fed by a younger generation of US kids like Vampire Weekend - teenagers who've obviously raided their parent's record collection and fallen in love with Paul Simon's Graceland. Best of all they're making it their own and having a ball. Then the tempo rises but the grooves slows to a sensuous grind with Bits & Pieces' Don't Stop The Music - a reggae funk workout with echoes of Bob Marley's Exodus and a great wiggout saxophone outro.

Now's your chance to get off if you're not in it for the long haul - Latinsizer's electro workout starts off innocently enough with a melodic ambience that would have made Drexciya proud. Before you know it the sparks are flying and electricity's in the air - a perfect occasion for Circuits' post-punk reggae skank to take over.

All of which segues neatly into a more laid back indie-ska number from The King Blues. Definitely time for a break in the chill out lounge with (according to their website) friends from Stockholm, Newcastle, San Francisco and Germany who all go under the name of Club des Belugas.

From Bristol via Scandinavia and fresh from a storming live set at the Shambala festival (thanks Chris, John and Dan - the 10th was the best so far!) come Lund. A Jazz quartet unafraid to experiment with turntables and theramins they come highly recommended - and criminally unsigned so you'll have to catch them live wherever you can... finally, a three note motif that reminded me of the Blade Runner soundtrack provides an excuse to drift off into a warm analogue sunset. Enjoy the ride!

A deep and joyful meditation

"Here I come, here I come"... It's straight in, no messing with Lee Perry's take on The Slickers' warning to the shotta bad boys - a selection many of you may know as an entirely different mix from the film 'The Harder they Come'. That's right, this one's my own celebration of Island Records' 50th! We're now in deep dub territory (Cultural Roots and an unknown french? white label) before Kromestar's modern interpretation of the old school acts as a perfect foil to Harry Mudie's visionary 'Dub with a Difference', a genre breaking mix of classical strings that sounds more like a DJ Shadow experiment than the 70s dub classic it actually is.

Then the first of two offerings from The Gladiators - a roots outfit who somehow never quite received the mainstream recognition they deserve - and back to more instrumental nuggets with Pete Chemist and a Bunny Lee production from I-Roy's Dread Baldhead LP. Stalwarts of the genre, Alpha & Omega, on a minimal tip, here represent for the UK soundsystem scene before Misty in Roots get us back to some ital lyricisms. Daweh Congo's not exactly blessed with the best of singing voices but there's a real charm this conscious sermon (nothing to do with the Nick Cave track of the same name!) and finally the Gladiators, again, show us how it's really done with more of their sublime harmonies.

An untitled track from The Soul Syndicate, arguably Jamaica's finest group of reggae instrumentalists takes the mix on a more upbeat slant before some Fresh Moods and the Digital Analog Band getting all Mystical with a joyful and breezy reggae-influenced lounge track perfect for getting in the mood for the summer festivals. More spirituality courtesy of Stefan Obermaier, an up and coming alumni of Kruder & Dorfmeister's Vienna school and another relatively unknown artist/producer well worth keeping a close eye on; A Man Called Pj, a friend from the ReggaeDubwise community who's 'Sound Like' (feat. Bongo Chilli) takes dancehall in all the right directions - conscious, fun and danceable.

All good things come to an end and as Abja's wonderfully slow groove dissolves into Tom Waits' hypnotic marimba it's time to take our leave. Until next time, enjoy.

There's no sell by date on quality

This one's more than a little bit special... Beese and Brtschitsch start us off with a slow burning take on the nature of time before we slow things down even more with Chalawa, Creation Rebel and a rare Sir Collins washedelic dub classic. Leroy Smart gets a series of superfluous vocals cuts started, followed by I-Roy's conscious words and the Abyssinians' sweet, sweet harmonies. John Holt's Tribal War, Ernest Wilson, Al Campbell - all great vocalists backed by the best of the best of Jamaica's musicians and producers before Bim Sherman wraps up this round of pure roots gold. We then turn the clock back to the days of rocksteady and early reggae courtesy of Winston Francis, The Freedom Singers and Prince Buster, all reminders that bass culture has a history well worth investigating. This timeless pedigree is more than apparent in The Circle's Mammy Blue - a beautiful groove which flows effortlessly into a more modern offering from Chinese Man. Spy From Cairo spices things up before yet another sublime Richard Dorfmeister mix cranks up the party vibe. The eclectic and highly recommended Fat Beat Sound System bring things right up to date with a cross-cultural dancehall gem then, finally, The Gaylads slip and slide into a never ending, ageless riddim that's at once ska, rocksteady and roots reggae. And did I mention that there's even a hidden track to lull you off to sleep? I hope you enjoy this one as much as i enjoyed making it :)

Beats Breaks Bass

There's more than a few surprises on this latest collection of bass-driven selections. Watch the ride - the journey starts with Deepfried Dub on a slightly misleading drum'n'bass orientated tone before Pilah (Dub Addict Sound System) half-times the tempo with Learoy Green's musings on the trials and difficulties of life. An early Black Uhuru chant continues the conscious vibes before a dubstep remix of dubious provenance (Collie Buddz remixed by Goodfellaz?) brings things up to date in the form of a phat slice of prime black vinyl. Dub Li Cut follows up with a new take on a classic riddim which leads neatly into the Dub Syndicate's history lesson. Junkyard represent with a jump-up two parter that sets the scene nicely for the Champion Sound of Dubmatix - one of my favourite tracks at the moment, with a wonderful production which effortlessly mixes a reggae soundsystem sensibility with big beat electronica.

We're well and truly in the world of downtempo lounge by the time we hit Roudoudou's hymn to peace and love. Radar throws in a sprinkling of world music then the Thievery Corporation proves once again why they're such masters of this style of modern, outernational reggae-influenced dance music. The original mix of Big Bud's Runaway is more rootsy than many of his usual uptempo productions (something he should do a lot more of imho!) and things continue to chill out nicely with Jambassa's wonderful contribution to the italian dub community (check out the previous two installments for a taste of some Sardinian techdub).

Neil Sparkes, once of Transglobal Underground, has done much of his best work with the Last Tribe. In recent years he's been travelling Africa recording musicians and returning to his studio to brew up ecletic dub infusions like Afrodisia. A surprisingly uptempo, dare I say it, middle of the road breakbeat number from Múm leads into le Peuple de L'Herbe's Dopebeats. By now the party's reached it's peak and it's time to send everyone home with a reminder of what we're celebrating in the first place - the wonderful healing power of the drums and the bass, as demonstrated perfectly by Linval Thompson's seminal Roots Man Dub.

Mr DJ's antique box of vinyl treasures (Vol.2)

Another break from the norm with a party-orientated mix of more black plastic blasts from the past designed to keep you entertained this xmas season. Weatherall kicks off the proceedings with a progressive house trance number which neatly dissolves into Sunship's Come True on the Filter label - an absolute goldmine of futuristic filtered disco-funk (see also Box Saga's Blackfly for proof of their pedigree) they just don't make 'em like this anymore! Lil Louis' x-rated French Kiss is an unlikely dance floor filler with its proto-bump-and-grind tempo rollercoaster ride - a Chicago house classic. Denmark's excellent Lulu Rouge take the techdub slant into Rockers Hi-Fi's sublime B-side to the now famous Push Push (another shout-out to Circle of Children Ed for buying me this one to play out). Then it's back to more traditional baroquedub territory with some rootsy cuts from A.N.R and Dreadzone (here reworking Transglobal Underground). I-shensound sets the scene for Bob Skeng's wonderful conscious reggae before Tunng winds up the proceedings with a bittersweet history lesson well worth staying up for. Finally Dollboy's Ringers drifts off into a suitably seasonal tinkle of bells. Merry xmas everybody :)

Mr DJ's antique box of vinyl treasures (Vol.1)

Back from the brink with a jump-up musical extravaganza ranging from krautrock workouts to beats, breaks and the usual heavy dose of dance-dub selections. Subtle by Design's 1st Movement in C minor is dedicated to the wonderfully generous and kind hearted Ed (it's his record after all!) and to the rest of the Circle of Children crew who used to let me DJ this kind of in-your-face ecclecticism at their scene setting semi-legal DIY club nights circa '95. Due respect! Other highlights include The Rootsman's take on club meets dub with a wonderfully bouncy steppers anthem. Watch out for the two slabs of heavy, heavy vinyl which close the set. The 'rocket' white label I bought literally hot off a backroom press from a record shop on Berwick street, London - I've no idea who it's by although the Herbie Hancock sample is hard to miss. If anyone knows anything more about this gem, please get in touch. The final track by the Deadly Avenger is off a 1998 vinyl EP for Illicit. It took Damon Baxter an eternity to come out with a proper Long player (the 2002 album Deep Red) by which time he'd managed to overproduce much of the life out of his trademark b-boy style. This is the real deal and it still sounds as fresh today as it did back then. Enjoy.

Inspiration for this 2 year anniversary mixtape comes courtesy of Relaxxx who (like so many before him) got in touch to say that mixtape 5 was his favourite so far - what is it with that techdub compilation?! Well he liked the fact that it was more "electro" than usual which got me thinking about early dancehall, and the fact that I hadn't yet featured that more digital end of the reggae spectrum...

I've crammed in too many classics into this special extended mix to mention each one in turn but a special mention goes to Jah Billah for letting me have a special edition copy of his Locobrigida remix and to Rockamovya - a collective of five musicians spanning the roots of Jamaican reggae and American jazz and who's track 'Warrior Sound' off their new album is destined to be the soundtrack to my summer. Reggae Dub Wise

Prepare yourselves, this one's more than a little bit special... Following on from the last instalment's appearance by Yabass, I'm very proud to showcase some of more of the artists from the excellent ReggaeDubwise music community website. I'm privileged and honoured to count myself as a member amongst such luminaries of the online reggae scene.

First off, though, Salmonella Dub kicks the proceedings off with the first in a sprinkling of Kiwi acts - still can't get over the wonderful land of the long white cloud. Watch out for more Aotearoa dub courtesy of Basscamp and Pitch Black, later on in the mix.

Don Fe is a don indeed amongst the world wide community of reggae producers at ReggaeDubwise.com. Here he represents with the wonderful Iron Flute Dub, followed up by DUBSYNATICX's super-chilled Treasure Isle Dub. Lackatee's another of my favourite artists at RDW. Here he's in full effect with a choice dub featuring Zacheous Jackson.

The Radikal Dub Collective pick up the pace a little before Version Big-Fi show off the talents which quite rightly earned them a nomination for "Best Dub Recording Or Album" at the 2008 Reggae Academy Awards... we're all proud of you guys!

From the Dub Syndicate's classic Commandment to Stereotyp breaking all the rules, Fruity's Diced and Sliced brings us neatly to Earlywrm, another producer creating waves online with his fresh and truly original productions. Basscamp edge us into more modern, dance orientated styles before Manudub displays his versatility with a hypnotic deep house cut which slips effortlessly into Pitch Black's Alternate State of consciousness. More dance floor action, although this time of a very different type, from Black Grass. The recent album launch party for their forthcoming third Long Player showed a too-cool-to-dance hoxton crowd how to boogie with a very special mix of soul, funk, hip-hop and reggae. Thanks for bringing a little bit of Brighton to the capital :)

Finally, just one more dance floor selection before Big Bud winds up the proceedings with an uncharacteristically downtempo offering.

Silver Linings

This happy-go-lucky collection starts on a slow burn with Burnt Friedman's inimitable filtered reggae-funk before taking off courtesy of Noiseshapper and Dreadzone, both stalwarts of the live dub scene at festivals across europe and beyond. Big up to Yabass who stands proudly amongst such greats with a huge production which he's made freely available on the excellent community website at reggaeDubwise. Much respect to this veteran of the reggae scene for the good vibes he helps to promote.

Hervé Salters, sometime Quannum Collective collaborator, just missed out on last month's hip-hop special. Here he represents with a great, quirky General Electriks track. Just can't get enough of Rhythm & Sound, whether their vocal version reworkings or, as here, with their clean minimal techno instrumentals. Gare Du Nord provides a nice bluesy interlude before a couple of great digidub offerings from Stefan Obermaier and David Last. Yet more Burnt Friedman, this time in the guise of Flanger, an electronic jazz project with Uwe Schmidt who some might know better as Señor Coconut. After the slightly disappointing re-release of Air's Moon Safari (so-so extra CD, great video documentary), here Rob's Musique Pour Un Enfant Jouet outdoes Godin & Dunckel at their own game, providing plenty of [A]mour, [I]magination and [R]êve. The things you learn on discogs.com...

Early Chemical Brothers circa 1994, off the Fourteenth Century Sky EP, before threatened legal action forced them to change their name. Cue exit planet dust. Time for some disco-electro fun courtesy of Jona Lewie followed up by an intelligent dancefloor filler from ZFO. We head home with Eels' anti-hero anthem. Enjoy the ride.

Originally released in 1999 (is it really 9 years ago?!) this newly remastered version of the samplelicious classic is finally presented here in all of its unadulterated glory. Predominantly recorded using an AtariST, an E64 sampler and a Mackie mixer these were the days before plug-ins, soft synths and all singing, all dancing timestretching, hard-disk recording DAW's. You can hear the midiverb effects working overtime, the over compressed, over driven buses pumping away, ducking the mix in time to the bass. Let's take it back to the old school!

Conceived as the soundtrack to an imaginary film detailing the exploits of a young man's struggle through the trials of ghetto life, the album is now available as originally intended, in the form of one continuous 54 minute mix.

Beats, Breaks and Rhymes

A hip-hop orientated mixtapes's been a long time coming and what better time then as we come of age and turn 21? For the uninitiated, there's nothing to fear; Bill Laswell and the Black Roots start you off on familiar roots territory before DJ Krush breaks out the beats in the most chilled out way possible. First off Prince Paul & Dan The Automator, each legendary in their own right, come together to remind the hip-hop fraternity that the genre can be used to talk intelligently about issues that matter more than women and bling. Next up two cuts from NTM, defunct superstars of the French scene, just to prove that not only do you not have to be American to make great hip-hop, but you can blend in influences as diverse as classical music and reggae toasting. Time now for the greats; Gang Starr and EPMD, the rhymes flowing like poetry followed by backroom genius Tommy Guerrero. The Quannum collective represents in full effect before Jedi Mind Tricks fly the flag for the young contenders. DAC's niga is as close to gansta rap as I get and if you've made it this far then you're probably ready for a reggae/beats mashup as exemplified by the Sofa Surfers, here featuring DJ Collage. Clean breaks from IV My People (more french hip-hop with Kool Shen making the NTM connection) then into electro/pop territory with Fujiya & Miyagi - a sign of just how far hip-hop culture has spread. The Roots' huge The Seed is an absolute classic of the genre, but it's not over yet... The Flirts from '82 predates Herbie Hancock's rockit by a year and (however cheesy) must have been a big electro influence with its HiNRG synth-pop. We finish off with yet another good use for a breakbeat; the funky psychedlic workout. Turn on, tune in , drop out. As far as hip-hop beats and breaks are concerned everything is allowed, everything is permitted.

Deep Down Dubs & Heartfelt Chants

Nothing but solid gold classics on this straight down the line compilation of both old and new reggae and dub tracks. It's a slow burning start with the Butch Cassidy Sound System proving that the best modern productions can easily stand alongside upfront dub greats such as the Mad Professor. KC White's lyrical brilliance takes us neatly into Horace Andy's superfluous reworking of Natural Mystic (maybe best known to some as a Bob Marley and The Wailers original) Ernest Ranglin's timeless dub brings us back to more modern times. Both the Dub Syndicate and, old friends, the G Corp have earned their place amongst the best of the new school, here standing proudly alongside Prince Jammy. Next up a truly heartfelt story from the Brooklyn Funk Essentials before a spicing of hip-hop picks up the pace. Before you know it you're propelled into Andrew Weatherall's massive 'Wilmot' - full of respect for the genre yet a wonderfully creative reinvention of what reggae/dancehall can be. One of my all time favourites. It's time to head home with Toots & The Maytals (this time not a Marley reworking!) and Devon Russel's wonderful 'You Found Heaven'. Then squeeze just one more wafer thin classic from The Exiles and you're done. Proper.

It's back to baroquedub basics on this new mixtape collection with a veritable patchwork of tunes both old and new. A deceptively slow burning three deck mix kicks off the proceedings before a pair of upfront dub gems turn up the heat and get things off to a proper skankin' start. But hold on, just before you know where you are Mark Pritchard's new take on library music sneaks in on the one drop rhythm and takes us into programmed drums territory... Pressure Drop's on an eastern vibe while South African Felix Laband serves up one of those drop dead gorgeous slices of MOR electronica. A proper random playlist mashup that somehow all hangs together. You might notice that I'm having a bit of a big beat revival here with both UNKLE and Kasabian providing big instrumental choons before The Nomad (aah, how I still miss NZ) steers us back subtly into the world of reggae. And what a varied world it is - Aisha's Mad Professor produced classic from '86 is a great reminder of how influencial UK roots reggae became in that decade (is it me or did the Orb almost base their entire career on a steal of her soulful vocal riff?). Then Majbour delivers a wonderful remix of Ennio Morricone before Earl 16's wonderful Niyabinghi takes us back to a time of punky reggae, when distinctions based on musical subgenres were less important than the quality of the music. The Au Pairs' Headache For Michelle has just got to be one of my all time favourites - great groove, great lyrics and I'm delighted to be able to present this absolute classic in all of its 12" glory. All this indie nostalgia isn't as off the wall as it seems as it's without a doubt fueling a new wave of bands and fans whether new rave or electro-punks and just to prove that ripping off your idols is a tradition as old as music itself here are The pastels doing an uncanny Velvet Underground/Moe Tucker ditty. Now that's what I call rock'n'roll.

Staring out, bleary eyed.

Apologies for the delayed release of this month's mixtape... it's been a hectic, hyper-busy time at baroquedub mansions with the death of a much loved laptop, the start of a new job and the purchase of a new house. There just don't seem to be enough hours in the day.

But, as usual, the kind words of thanks and encouragement from listeners around the world have reminded me why I do this and made me find time for another round of lovingly crafted music mixing.

My thanks to you all. Keep the emails coming and I'll keep bringing out the mixtapes.

At just under one and a half hours in length this new instalment in the baroquedub mixtape series is expertly timed to last for the entire length of my new commute into work. Worthing to London (for anyone in the UK) isn't a bad train journey but it certainly needs plenty of quality music to make the time pass...

Starting off in a bleary eyed meditative mood, Loop Guru's Third Chamber represents one of the best sunrise ragas I've yet heard from the new school of world-music samplists. Light, spacey drum & bass picks up the pace with exemplary remix contributions from PFM and Spring Heel jack. Who'd have thought it? Already nearly half way through and by this time my brain's in gear enough to cope with some vocals and Money Mark's right on the button with a bitter sweet ditty just made for those early morning blues. Staring out the train window and the mind starts to wander again, off into exotic lands with beats and breaks courtesy of Krush, and assorted Ninja luminaries. DDR and Quantic keep it on the down-low before Andrea Parker's pristine glacial production emerges from the Vienna school's cotton wool world skank. This one's dedicated to Mr. Nic Napalm - the best work music DJ anyone could ask for (how I miss the erudite eclecticism of his office playlists!) By now we're getting ready for business... Parisian electro-punk-influenced house blows away the last of the cobwebs followed by Dark Globe's breakbeat missive. Then the sheer quality of Drexciya's timeless Digital Tsunami prepares for Maps' Back and Forth soft landing. A great anthemic ending designed to set you up for the day.

Baroque Dub Mixtape Thirteen

Strange Journey

Unlucky for some, this 13th instalment in the baroquedub mixtape series is a very special journey through global sounds and timeless grooves. Kicking off with one of Natacha Atlas' better solo projects since leaving TransGlobal Underground. The pace soon picks up with 'Le Rythme de la Parole', an incredible meeting of Malian and Sufi musicians displaying the kind of intricate, syncopated drumming which would put many a drum'n'bass producer to shame. We stay in Mali to highlight the late Ali Farka Toure's incredible take on the blues before moving on to both old and new interpretations of this classic African trance-groove. Then it's off to the Americas via Cuba (Orishas), Columbia (Aterciopelados), Brazil (Bebeto) and New Mexico (Calexico) before stopping off in the states to name check Fried Wire - one of the best new dub producers I've come across in a long while. From here onwards the reggae skank takes over, starting with a classic Bush Chemists mix we soon leave the UK and head south to Marseilles in France where both North African and Jamaican influences weigh heavily on Moussu T's infectious little ditty. A quick jump across the Mediterranean and Orchestra Baobab's mix of reggae, afro-cuban and funk elements reminds us that the riddim has its roots in the very soul of Africa, a pulse of life which left its mark to the east in India and wherever else our ancestors settled. How could I miss out Manu Chao? A truly gifted musical troubadour who relishes the sonic wonders of the world. Then the comedown after all our travels comes courtesy of the Magnolia Electric Co. before the ever-so cheesy Braziliera of Tribalistas' Velha Infancia acts as that 7inch single you bring home from your holidays as a reminder of the sun, the sea and the disco bar. Baroque Dub Mixtape Twelve

[techdub + dubstep flashback]

With clean, minimal lines this game of two halves starts with a veritable who's who of the netlabel scene as it stood at the height of techdub. Thinner/Autoplate, Realaudio.ch, Uran97 and Legoego, all present and correct with releases still freely available from the superfluous archive.org. But this giant of the Open Source audio scene has also served as a platform for more recent developments in deep bass. Dubstep, the bastard child of grime, jungle and techno has grown on the net through a series of blogs, forums and sharity sites, allowing this wonderfully fragmented scene to flourish - unified only by a common dedication to experimentation in sound and a profound respect for riddim driven grooves. The original reggae influences may have become distilled as the artists have developed their own voice but you'll still find enough studio trickery to keep even the most dedicated dubheads happy. Obviously not one for the purists, only those from the post-rave generation should apply.

We B Movin, alright - half way round the world from NZ to UK so this may be the last mixtape for a few months... cherish it! Number 8's already done the tribute to Aotearoa but I couldn't help throwing in a few more Kiwi artists for nostalgic reasons. Katchafire may be strictly roots with their uncanny impersonation of the Wailers but Tiki and The Nomad are hardly purists in their approach to reggae. Also watch out for more of a funk influence creeping in. It's about time! where do you think all these breaks come from? It's not quite the full-on funk soul brother compilation I've been threatening for a while but who knows?... could be with you sometime soon - stay tuned. For now, just enjoy the sisters doing it for themselves with a trio of funk gems from the ladies. And as a final farewell to this beautiful isle - a superb Fat Freddy's live bootleg shows them off jamming at their best. Choice, bro.

A Tribute to Aotearoa

Opening with the first of two remixes from Hirini Melbourne & Richard Nunns' Te Ku Te Whe (a classic of modern Maori music) this mix is a celebration of the rich tapestry of New Zealand music.

First off a Skream dubstep cut gets an airing having somehow missed out on an appearance on mixtape 6. Then Messrs Friedman and Liebezeit set the scene with some tripped out digi dub before Salmonella Dub and Katchafire start us on our journey. The Hulu Project's German/Siberian crossover is a reminder of Kiwis' lust for the big OE (overseas experience) before returning to their home and roots.

The rest of this CD length mix is almost a who's who of New Zealand reggae - anoraks might be interested to learn that International Observer is non other than Tom Bailey who spent the 80s as one third of The Thompson Twins (who'd have thought it?!).

I couldn't resist dropping a Sixtoo track - after the disappointment of DJ Shadow's last album I reckon this guy's definitely the new king of instrumental hip-hop.

Finally Downtown Brown and The Sunshine Sound System make an appearance as a reminder to anyone who's passed through Wellington and had a chance to party on the now sunk F69 frigate - once the best bar/venue I think I've ever been to. And how could I miss out Fat Freddy? Never as good on record as the electrifying live band they really are, I highly recommend you all go out and treat yourself to their recent DVD.

From Style Scott and On-U's upfront dub to the broken digital meanderings of Monolake and Burnt Friedman we're back in digi-dub mode. But there's nothing cold and clinical about this selection, even Spooky's old school, progressive house classic 'Intoxication' has a warm, almost rootsy quality to it - with D-Flex at the controls turning its four to the floor rhythm into a steppers anthem. And check Håkan Lidbo's Trinity... often lost to the experimental glitch brigade here's a track which proves he's just as capable of nu-dub dancefloor fillers as Andreas Tilliander. Choice!

Baroque Dub Mixtape Five [Techdub + Dubstep]

Every now and then I discover a new genre of music, a new clique... a new sound which re-awakens my love of music. Something which reminds me of the potential of sound to create an aural landscapes in which to dream and to lose oneself. When I hear it I'm like an addict - I buy and download everything I can find. I immerse myself in this new soundscape of possibilities... Both the grime influenced Dubstep and the germanic Techdub had that effect on me when I first heard them and so I felt it was probably time to pay homage to these two giants of the underground club scene.

I must admit to being a little worried that the programmed beats and the 'four to the floor' inflections might leave some of baroquedub's listeners cold... where's the eclecticism? where's the cross fertilisation of genres? Well sometimes I just like that Kraftwerk machine drilling into my subconscious. I've thrown in Tcha-k Federateur's live recording of Le Rythme just to offset all those heavily quantised machine generated rhythms but it's only for show: delve into those repetitive beats, listen to those shimmering sounds and learn from the subtlety of von Oswald & Ernestus's dubby techno.
