Baroque Dub Mixtape Seven

From Style Scott and On-U's upfront dub to the broken digital meanderings of Monolake and Burnt Friedman we're back in digi-dub mode. But there's nothing cold and clinical about this selection, even Spooky's old school, progressive house classic 'Intoxication' has a warm, almost rootsy quality to it - with D-Flex at the controls turning its four to the floor rhythm into a steppers anthem. And check Håkan Lidbo's Trinity... often lost to the experimental glitch brigade here's a track which proves he's just as capable of nu-dub dancefloor fillers as Andreas Tilliander. Choice!

Tracklist:

Baroque Dub Mixtape Six

Jump up breaks, roots jungle and even a touch of hands in the air rave courtesy of Dreadzone - mixtape 06 is my homage to the old school: before jungle beats morphed into the cold and clinical moodiness of drum'n'bass, before breakbeat went mainstream in the form of house-influenced mashups... it's all about those big rolling reggae basslines and that offbeat skank. Here's to reclaiming the dancefloor with music guaranteed to put a smile on your face. And if all this partying gets a little too much for you - hang in there - Gravenhurst's uncanny imitation of Nick Drake and Sonic Boom's soporiphic ambient masterpiece are there to help bring you down gently once you make it to the other side.

Tracklist:

[01] Madhuvanti - Masaladosa (00:00)
[02] Yosh - Jumping The Bass (04:43)
[03] Freestylers - Warning (Featuring Navigator) (10:43)
[04] Big Bud - Rice 'n' Beans (15:15)
[05] Big Bud - Children of Jah (20:46)
[06] Congo Natty - All Ganja Man (Luv Remix) (27:54)
[07] Alex Reece - Pulp Fiction (34:21)
[08] Nils Petter Molvaer - Khmer (40:05)

Baroque Dub Mixtape Five [Techdub + Dubstep]

Every now and then I discover a new genre of music, a new clique... a new sound which re-awakens my love of music. Something which reminds me of the potential of sound to create an aural landscapes in which to dream and to lose oneself. When I hear it I'm like an addict - I buy and download everything I can find. I immerse myself in this new soundscape of possibilities... Both the grime influenced Dubstep and the germanic Techdub had that effect on me when I first heard them and so I felt it was probably time to pay homage to these two giants of the underground club scene.

I must admit to being a little worried that the programmed beats and the 'four to the floor' inflections might leave some of baroquedub's listeners cold... where's the eclecticism? where's the cross fertilisation of genres? Well sometimes I just like that Kraftwerk machine drilling into my subconscious. I've thrown in Tcha-k Federateur's live recording of Le Rythme just to offset all those heavily quantised machine generated rhythms but it's only for show: delve into those repetitive beats, listen to those shimmering sounds and learn from the subtlety of von Oswald & Ernestus's dubby techno.

Baroque Dub Mixtape Two

[The Sound Libraries Edition]

Emerging from soundscapes worthy of Hermann Hess' journeyers to the east, this mix soon settles into a mid-paced drive of solid abstract funk and fat breaks. There's no sell-by date on quality, these beats have been re-used and abused by many a hip-hop producer. Play spot the sample and enjoy these timeless gems in all their stripped-down glory.

As the man says, "With the drums you have the capacity to create a mood. It doesn't matter if you're playing in a club, or if you're playing in hall, or if your playing in the streets. It's a responsibility that you have... to create a mood."

Dedicated to the many talented composers, musicians and recording engineers who worked in the library music industry during the 1970s and 80s.
